Fixing your iPod without opening it

gazihan's picture

Ok it was on Crunchgear, now it's on NY Times and digg. They tell you to open your iPod to fix the booting problem. It probably is getting the job done, but opening your iPod will make it loose. There is an easy way to make your iPod work again without opening it up.

Symptoms: When you connect your iPod to the USB cable, you see the white Apple logo on black screen, but the iPod won't work.

Solution: Follow these steps below to fix your iPod. I'll explain why afterwards.

  1. Connect the iPod to the computer
  2. Push the middle button and menu button together and keep them pushed till you see the screen go blank.
  3. Right when you see the white Apple logo, push the middle button and the left(rewind) button together and keep them pushed till you see the diagnostic screen.
  4. If you failed step 3, go back to step 2.
  5. Let the iPod rest in this diagnostic menu for a long time, a couple hours to be sure. If it does not work, try longer next time
  6. Push the middle button and menu button together and keep them pushed till you see the screen go blank (just like step 2).
  7. Congratulations, you just got your iPod fixed

The reason for the iPod not booting is simple: you drained the battery completely and your battery is not as powerful as it was before. When you connect it to the USB cable, the iPod waits for a while to recharge, but it does not wait enough. The boot process needs a lot of power since the backlight is full on (which is ridiculous, thanks Apple) and it needs some battery to use the hard drive. Eventually it fails to boot and keeps draining power, which takes us into a killer loop - the iPod will never get out of it. What we do by taking it to the diagnostic menu is to stop its boot attempt and give it some time to recharge. It's that simple.

I suspect Apple knows about this and does not care because it helps them make money on repairs, battery replacements and new iPod sales... Of course I'm just speculating.

I hope this helped you making your iPod work again without opening it up!

O.K. I understand this fix

O.K. I understand this fix by giving the ipod a chance to charge. I have a different problem hope someone has a fix, these are the steps I have taken.
1. The five R's
2. Format with windows fat32(quick and full format)
3. Open and insert business card trick
4. I mean I have put this thing in disk mode and restored to 1.2.1 and 1.2.2(nothing)
5. Changed between three different ribbon cables which connect the harddrive to the logic board
My problem ipod hangs after, being on and playing video or music for mare than 5-10mins. After it locks up I reset with menu+center buttons it stays on apple logo forever eventually get sad icon (hardware failure), After many resets eventually will boot normal everything works fine right? Wrong! either it will hang while playing video or music or I think it's fixed shut if off holding play down. Retry to play vid or music after sitting in sleep for 5-10mins. later. The thing is always I mean always locked up after it sits awhile. I repeat reseting and it's back only to have problems again! This is a brand new hard drive and battery in this 30GB 5G IPOD VIDEO. A big chunk of money I've already dropped into the thing thinking those would fix the problem!(Sad Icon!)
Yes I ran Diagnostic mode! If it's locked up and I can eventually get it in diagnostic mode, run I/O checks corrupt hard drive I can tell instead of MK3008GAL it's a bunch of numbers and letters and says it's 96GB no it's not! Keep reseting then run diag. it finally shows MK3008GAL 27gb hard drive, boots fine again, only to go back to freezing! It will cahrge+hold a charge, go into disk mode, sync, go into diagnostic mode, format, and will restore with out glitch or errors. My problems I awake to go to work pick the thing up try to use it and end up resetting it for 5-30mins. Only to maybe listen to a song or two then lock up? Please don't say LOGIC BOARD, LOOSE CONN., I am at loss for my frustration!!!!!!!!! Any other ideas are very welcome or hope someone else has been through this and figured out the solution! I am by far not electronically challenged, I did already replace HD and Battery, very small tedious work! If your tech please help!!!!

Hello, I had the same

Hello, I had the same problem, here is something that might work.

I kept getting the CONNECT TO RESTORE message, there were two that I changed that made the ipod get recognized. My battery was not seated good, I thought as long as it was in there and stayed it was good. But the plastic clip got loose so I took and cut the end off of a dead battery I had and tightened the connection. The hard drive cable has to lay flat as it lays outside the hard drive. That is why they have that glue holding it down. I had to play with it a dozen times before it worked.

Ill keep you updated, im

Ill keep you updated, im currently leaving charging throught the diagnostic menu. Im going leave it all night long. Im sure its not going to work, i mean, im really skeptic about this. My iPod 5g always gives me the --connect your ipod to your pc, use itunes to restore-- message. Its seriously an endless loop.

I tried everything, and I really mean it. I hope that your method works, if not, ill try to open it and do the --business card-- trick.

best of luck dude

best of luck dude

Ipod Video

Okay, I'm trying this solution, when I get to the Diag mode you mention, is that where it shows on the screen menu: manual test Previous: Auto test? Just making sure I'm at the diagnostic menu. Let me know if this is correct, I'm leaving it at this screen for a couple of hours like you said. Thanks

My daughter's iPod works again

Many thanks. Not only was my daughter's 30GB iPod continually resetting, she thought she had lost all of her songs, photos, videos, basically a teenager's life. So to get it working and see all of the songs on there again, I can't thank you enough.

My laptop also picked up she had an Autorun virus on her iPod.

Thank you again, she was in tears as she went to bed and in the morning she will find it not only fixed but everything still there.

im having that exact problem

im having that exact problem now but this isnt working for me... its driving me crazy because i have 14,000 songs plus videos on there which i cant exactly back up onto my computer

ipods

Apple's iTunes software can be used to transfer music to the devices from computers using certain versions of Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems

Well thanks for the tips,

Well thanks for the tips, they are all very practical and the bottom line is that they actually work. I've been searching for solutions for my Ipod and my search got me here. I just got an ipod mini battery and I had few problems attaching it, I tried these steps above and everything works as planned.

Can not do a restore

I have an ipod nano second generation. It has always worked fine, but now when I plug it in my computer, it does not show in my computer or in itunes. I have reset it several times, I have deleted itunes and re installed... But still not working. Some one told me I have to do a restore, but that is impossible becuae Itunes does not see when it is connected. Do you have a bit of advice..
Thank you in advance.

4th Generation 20gb

So my Ipod is showing a battery icon with an exclamation point in a triangle next to the batter. I'm not sure what malfunction this indicates but if you have a fix that would be amazing. I tried the method you gave but no matter what I did the icon would pop up immediately after the screen went blank.

Replacing iPod batteries is

Replacing iPod batteries is the biggest money make for Apple for sure. This is so typical of Apple going back to the days when they were selling Mac only operating system Macs.

Thank you so much!

My boyfriend Craig could not get mine to work, I gave it to him and he went home and took a nap instead of fixing my ipod.. I guess thats okay cause he is so sexy. I could just hug you for this tip
